치솟는 연료비에 美크루즈선 운항 중단…승객들, 배에서 쫓겨날 위기

2년 전 2027년 11월까지 3년 간 7개 대륙 순회 목표로 항해 시작

'오디세이'호는 2년 전 장기 해상 생활과 세계 여행을 결합한 상품이라는 선전과 함께 3년 간 7개 대륙을 순회하는 항해를 시작했다.

플로리다에 본사를 둔 '빌라 비 레지던스'는 과거 객실 하나 당 월 연료비가 평균 1800달러(약 241만원)였지만 최근 이란 전쟁으로 아시아 일부 지역에서 6000∼8000달러(약 802만∼1070만원)까지 치솟았다고 밝혔다. 이 회사는 일정을 늦추고 항구에 머무는 시간을 늘려 연료 소비를 줄이려 했지만, 급등한 연료비를 상쇄하지 못했다고 밝혔다.

회사는 "우리는 그로 인한 영업 손실을 계속 감당할 수 없었다. 전액 인상분을 주민들에게 전가하는 것은 현실적인 해결책이 아니다. 현재 우리는 구조 조정을 진행하면서 승객, 승무원, 직원들을 지원하는 데 집중하고 있다"고 말했다.

시아누크빌 자치항은 지난주 성명을 통해 이 선박이 10월23일 입항해 5일 간 머문 뒤 베트남으로 향할 예정이었지만 28일 출항하지 않고 항구에 머물고 있다고 밝혔다.

크루즈선에는 15개 국적의 승객 203명과 156명의 승무원이 탑승해 있다. 승객 대부분은 미국인들이다. 수용 인원은 650명이다.

승객들에게는 배에서 내리라는 안내가 있었지만, 승무원들의 상태는 불분명하다.

오디세이는 2027년 11월 항해를 마칠 예정이었다. 회사는 2029년 초 2번째 주거용 크루즈선 운항을 시작할 계획이었지만, 오디세이 항해 중단에 관한 성명에서는 2번째 운항에 대해 언급하지 않았다.

A U.S. cruise ship on a residential world voyage suspended its operations in Cambodia due to fuel costs, forcing hundreds of passengers to abandon their floating homes.

The Odyssey set sail two years ago on a three-year voyage to the seven continents marketed as combining long-term living at sea with global travel.

The Florida-based company said monthly fuel expenses per cabin that historically averaged $1,800 has recently reached an estimated $6,000 to $8,000 in parts of Asia during the war in Iran. Villa Vie Residences said it sought to reduce fuel consumption by slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port, but was unable to offset the surge in fuel costs.

"We have been unable to continue carrying the resulting operating losses," it said. "Passing the full increase on to residents is not a realistic solution. Our focus now is on supporting residents, crew, and employees" while it tries to restructure.

Sihanoukville Autonomous Port said in a statement last week that the ship docked on Oct. 23 for a five-day visit. It was to head to Vietnam but remained in the port Wednesday.

The ship carried 203 passengers with 15 nationalities, mostly Americans, and 156 crew members. It had a capacity of 650 residents.

Passengers have been told to leave the ship, but the crew's status was unclear.

The Odyssey had a confirmed itinerary into November 2027. The company planned for a second residential cruise ship to enter service in early 2029, but the statement on the suspension of the Odyssey's voyage did not address the second ship.
