[서울=뉴시스] 유세진 기자 = 자선기금 모금을 위해 호주 전역 5300㎞의 자전거 횡단에 나선 82살의 호주 남성이 10만5000 호주달러(약 1억562만원)의 기금을 모은 완주 하루 만에 사망했다고 BBC가 4일 보도했다.

밥 몽고메리의 가족은 "그의 죽음은 "예상치 못한 일이었지만 평온했다"고 소셜미디어 성명에서 밝혔다. 그가 "마지막 주행"이라고 부른, 서호주 브룸에서 시드니 남서쪽 보럴까지의 여정을 마친 지 하루 만이었다.

그는 18세 손자와 함께 루게릭병으로 불리는 운동신경원질환(MND) 자선단체를 위한 기금 모금을 위해 6주 간의 라이딩에 나섰었다.

이번 도전은 그가 MND 뉴사우스웨일스(NSW)를 지원하기 위한 6번째 모금 라이딩이었으며, 이는 "그에게 매우 개인적인 사안"이었다.

가족들은 59년을 함께 한 그의 아내 제니가 그의 '평온한 죽음' 순간 내내 곁에 있었다고 전하며, 몽고메리는 숨지기 몇 시간 전에도 여전히 열정적으로 자신의 메시지를 전하고 있었다고 전했다

몽고메리와 그의 손자 톰 말콤은 2일 보럴에 도착해 지역 사회의 열렬한 박수를 받았다고 호주 ABC 방송은 보도했다.

그는 ABC에 여행 중 사람들을 만나고 각 정차 지점에서 맥주 한두 잔을 즐기는 것이 동기 부여가 되었다고 말했다.

몽고메리는 "그 과정에서 수많은 이야기와, 현금을 넣기 위해 주머니에 손을 넣었던 많은 사람들을 만났는데, 정말 멋진 일이었다"라고 말한 것으로 전해졌다.

그는 사촌이 MND로 사망한 후 이 도전에 나서기로 했으며, 이전 라이딩에서 거의 30만 호주달러(약 3억185만원)를 모금했었다. 몽고메리는 자신의 모금 페이지에 "나는 가족과 친구들이 고통받는 모습을 보았다. 가슴이 찢어진다"고 썼었다.

말콤은 3일 시드니로 계속 이동했고, 그곳에서 가족들은 다시 모여 축하했다.

하지만 파티가 끝난 직후 몽고메리는 갑작스레 건강 이상을 나타냈다고 MND NSW 최고경영자 리암 오메라가 말했다.

오메라는 몽고메리의 죽음에 깊은 슬픔을 느낀다며 그를 "소중한 친구이자 MND NSW의 지칠 줄 모르는 지지자"라고 불렀다.

An 82-year-old bike rider who cycled 3,300 miles (5,300km) across Australia to raise money for charity has died a day after completing the challenge.

Bob Montgomery's death was "unexpected" but "peaceful", his family said in a statement on social media, just a day after he had finished what he had dubbed "One Last Ride" from Broome in Western Australia to Bowral, south-west of Sydney.

He and his 18-year-old grandson had raised about A$105,000 ($74,000; £55,000) for a motor neurone disease (MND) charity with the six-week ride.

It was his sixth fundraising ride in support of MND NSW, the statement said, adding that it was "a cause that was deeply personal to him".

His wife of 59 years, Jenny was by his side during his "peaceful passing", his family said, adding that he was "still passionately sharing his message only hours before his passing."

Montgomery and his grandson Tom Malcolm had arrived in Bowral on Sunday to "roaring applause" from his local community, the national broadcaster ABC reported.

He told ABC he had been motivated by meeting people along the way and enjoying a "beer or two" at each stopover.

"There's so many stories and so many people we met along the way who put their hands into their pockets to throw some cash in, which is fantastic," Montgomery was quoted as saying.

He had been inspired to take on the challenge after losing a cousin to MND and had raised almost A$300,000 on his previous rides. "I have seen family and friends suffer. It's heart breaking," he wrote on his fundraising page.

Malcolm had continued onto Sydney on Monday where the family had gathered once again to celebrate.

But shortly after the party, Montgomery suffered a medical episode, MND NSW chief executive Liam O'Meara said.

O'Meara said he was "deeply saddened" by Montgomery's death, calling him a "cherished friend and tireless supporter of MND NSW".
